I never really understood the concept behind twitter lol
When it first came out, I remember creating an account just like any other social media accounts. But I never knew what to "tweet". Recently one of my friends sent me a link to read something on twitter and that led me to read few friends and family's tweets.
Some of them were hilarious... and it was not surprising because those tweets were by people I knew that were naturally very funny. But few other people tweeted constantly negative things, and reading them got me feeling down. Once again it wasn't surprising because those tweets were by people I knew that were naturally Debbie Downers.
This got me thinking and I realized 2 things:
One... Twitter has the ability to give you a glimpse into someone's thoughts and personality... and you can really analyze them based on their tweets.
Two... This can be used to your benefit if you really wanted to.
Before any major meeting, interview, etc, people tend to go to Linkden and do a little digging on the person they are meeting to have things to talk about or even to get to know the person a little. As much as Linkden is great, I find twitter is basically people's thoughts or rants. Linkden people still keep it professional and they some what carefully choose what they want to post.
If you are going on a sales meeting and you really want to build rapport with the individual and find things to talk about that they will feel comfortable opening up with you, you need to know what are their interest are, what do they enjoy, likes or dislikes.
What I also noticed is that, people that are normally private or quiet, and normally it is hard to read them, they may post things that will get you some sort of understanding of who they are. However, even if they don't personally tweet something, they are retweeting other things, which most likely are things they are interested in or they find funny, or thats what they support, etc.
Using this method, you and the other person will have so much to talk about, so much in "common" and build quality rapport :)
The next time you have an important meeting, or you really want to connect with someone, go find them on twitter and go through their tweets and get a feel of who they really are!
Any communication skills expert will tell you how important it is to build rapport... Hope this helped!
Enjoy!
